Pondicherry is split into two by a canal that runs parallel to the sea shore. This used to strictly divide the Indian area, known as the "Ville Noire", from the French area, along the beach, called the "Ville Blanche".
This distinction survives to this day, the separation is tangible and disconcerting. Two realities, so close yet so different.
